Undoubtedly, the most common complaint that I hear from new clients is that their previous massage therapist went too deep and even that their sessions were painful. I never want you to experience pain on my massage table, period.

I always aim to avoid pain by listening and responding to your words and to the movements of your breath and body. In my therapeutic massage sessions I guide my clients in effective breathing so that they can get the fullest benefit from their sessions. However, the best indicator a massage therapist ever has of your comfort is your word. Please don’t be shy to speak up about what pressure is right for you. We love that!

Hello massage-lovin’ peoples!

I wanted to give you heads up on something that I’m going to be doing. Starting now I’m going to be publishing helpful posts for you on various wellness related topics. The types of things I’ll be posting will be focused on and intended to improve your life in some way. They may not always have anything to do with massage. But rather they may often simply fall into the broader category of life balance and wellness.

One such topic that I’ll be starting that is related to massage is a series of posts on “How to get the most from your massage“. If, when you read any of these posts, you find that something is unclear or you have a question (or you just want to chide me about a typo), please… do leave me a comment. I am notified with these comments and I will respond.

In fact, I am thrilled to receive your comments because it shows me that someone out there is listening. And it creates a conversation among everyone who wishes to participate, which is a whole lot more fun than just hearing myself think.

Touch Understanding

A massage isn’t really measured in the number of minutes or depth of pressure, but rather in the level of touch-understanding that can be reached in a session. Touch-understanding, as I’m calling it, is a direct experience of understanding exactly what type and level of touch a client’s body is in need of at any moment in a session.

It’s a felt thing that starts with making a connection first as people. Often just talking authentically with the client about the challenges they are experiencing can be enough to create this initial connection that is the pre-requisite for touch-understand to take place.

Therapeutic Massage and Palliative Cancer Therapy

In recent years the role of alternative therapies in cancer care has transformed the way many patients cope with illness and related side effects. An older paradigm suggested that cancer could only be effectively treated with traditional treatments like surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Many patients refused this notion and sought alternative therapies outside of their treatment regimen not were not only relaxing but eased side-effects associated with traditional treatment regimens, including those caused y chemotherapy drugs.

Today, not only patients but also the medical establishment recognizes the importance of alternative therapies, and particularly the importance of massage therapy in comprehensive cancer care. Massage, like most alternative cancer therapies, is most effective when used in conjunction with traditional treatments.

Massage is unique in alternative cancer therapy because it is able to remedy feelings of isolation that many patients battling a difficult disease encounter. The experience of human contact is particularly important when facing a difficult diagnosis and massage can provide that unique experience to cancer patients, who often succumb to feelings of being overwhelmed by the nature of their diagnosis, family implications, and other difficulties associated with cancer treatments.

Often, the most valuable treatments to patients battling a difficult diagnosis are those which can allow the patient to be as comfortable as possible. Patients battling aggressive cancers, such as mesothelioma, often forgo traditional treatments which will put their body through a great deal of stress and discomfort in favor of those such as massage, which provide peace of mind and comfort. Patients undergoing chemotherapy often find that treatments which are able to relax their mind and body, will dramatically lessen side effects like nausea, restlessness, and fever.

As with any treatment, massage therapy may or may not benefit a particular patient’s treatment regimen. However, given the positive experience many patients have benefited from, it is certainly worth exploring. Maximizing your cancer treatment with cooperation between patient, family, and physician will allow patients to live longer, healthier, and be more comfortable, which is the goal of all comprehensive therapies.

After publishing this special it came to my awareness that I neglected to mention a restriction on the distance that I can drive for this discount. Because of the extra driving time involved in sessions taking place further than 15 miles from my home (92102) I have to limit this special to sessions within a 15 mile radius.
